В уютной гостиной домика под большим дубом было особенно холодно и сыро в этот ноябрьский вечер. Мышка Милочка, закутавшись в плед, с тоской смотрела на пустую корзинку для пирогов.
– Знаешь, Растил, – вздохнула она, – мне страшно хочется чего-то душевного. Чтобы дождь стучал в окно, в печке потрескивали дрова, а на столе стоял бы самовар с душистым чаем и тарелка румяных пирожков с малиновым вареньем.
Заяц Растил, разглядывавший пустые банки на полке, грустно почесал за ухом.
– Мечта, что и говорить, Мышкин, мечта... Но взгляни-ка в нашу кладовую: flour (мука) закончилась, jam (варенье) мы съели ещё в прошлое воскресенье, а про tea (чай) и говорить нечего – осталась одна пыльная щепотка Earl Grey. Чтобы всё это купить, нужны money (деньги). А наши запасы... – он вывернул пустые карманы своего жилета.
– Так значит, нужно заработать! – решительно заявила Милочка, сбрасывая плед. – Пойдём искать работу!
– Работу? – удивился Растил. – Но кто нас возьмёт? Мы же всего лишь маленькие зверьки из леса.
– А вот кто возьмёт того, кто может говорить с большим миром! – воскликнула Мышкин, и её глазки хитро блеснули. – Нам нужно выучить English (английский язык)! Весь большой бизнес ведётся на нём! Вон даже умный Ворон, который ведает доставкой орехов из-за океана, говорит, что без business English (делового английского) сейчас – никуда!
Так у двух друзей родился не просто план по добыче продуктов, а настоящий educational goal (учебная цель). Их путь к чаю с пирожками лежал через грамматику и словарный запас.
In the cozy living room of the house under the big oak tree, it was especially cold and damp on this November evening. Little Mouse Milochka, wrapped in a blanket, looked wistfully at the empty pie basket.
"You know, Rastil," she sighed, "I really want something soul-warming. For the rain to tap on the window, the firewood to crackle in the stove, and for there to be a samovar with fragrant tea and a plate of rosy pies with raspberry jam on the table."
Hare Rastil, who was examining the empty jars on the shelf, scratched behind his ear sadly.
"A dream, no doubt, Whiskers, a dream... But look at our pantry: the flour is gone, we ate the jam last Sunday, and as for tea – don't even mention it – there's just a dusty pinch of Earl Grey left. To buy all this, we need money. And our reserves..." – he turned out the empty pockets of his vest.
"So that means we need to earn it!" Milochka declared decisively, throwing off the blanket. "Let's go look for work!"
"Work?" Rastil was surprised. "But who will hire us? We're just little forest creatures."
"Ah, they'll hire those who can talk to the big world!" exclaimed Whiskers, and her eyes sparkled slyly. "We need to learn English! All the big business is conducted in it! Even the wise Raven, who manages the delivery of nuts from overseas, says that without business English these days – you're nowhere!"
Thus, the two friends came up with not just a plan to get groceries, but a real educational goal. Their path to tea and pies lay through grammar and vocabulary.

Первым делом друзья решили составить resume (резюме). Они уселись за старый деревянный стол, достали лист берёзовой коры и перо.

– О, а я добавлю: I can organize things and I am a good friend! (Я умею организовывать вещи, и я хороший друг!) – с энтузиазмом записал Растил.
– Отлично! – похвалила Мышкин. – Теперь нужен objective (цель). Напишем: To find a part-time job to buy ingredients for tea and pies. (Найти работу с частичной занятостью, чтобы купить ингредиенты для чая и пирогов).
– Теперь перечислим наши skills (навыки), – продолжила она. – I can dig (копать), I can jump (прыгать), I can deliver small parcels (доставлять маленькие посылки).
– А я: I can count seeds (считать семечки), I can be very quiet (быть очень тихой), I have excellent taste (у меня отличный вкус).
Резюме было готово. Оставалось самое сложное – выучить ключевые фразы для поиска работы.
– Запомни, Растил, – сказала Мышкин, – если увидишь объявление, надо спросить: "Is this position still available?" (Эта вакансия ещё открыта?).
– А если спросят, почему мы хотим работать, – подхватил Растил, – мы ответим: "We are motivated, responsible and we learn quickly" (Мы мотивированы, ответственны и быстро учимся).
– "We are ready to start immediately!" (Мы готовы начать немедленно!) – хором закончили они и рассмеялись. Первый урок был усвоен!
The first thing the friends decided to do was to write a resume. They sat down at the old wooden table, took out a sheet of birch bark and a pen.
"Where do we start?" asked Rastil.
"Start with yourself!" prompted Milochka. "My name is Rastil. I am a hare. I am hard-working and fast."
"Oh, and I'll add: I can organize things and I am a good friend!" Rastil wrote down enthusiastically.
"Excellent!" praised Whiskers. "Now we need an objective. Let's write: To find a part-time job to buy ingredients for tea and pies."
"Now let's list our skills," she continued. "I can dig, I can jump, I can deliver small parcels."
"And I: I can count seeds, I can be very quiet, I have excellent taste."
The resume was ready. The most difficult part remained – learning key phrases for the job search.
"Remember, Rastil," said Whiskers, "if you see an advertisement, you need to ask: 'Is this position still available?'"
"And if they ask why we want to work," Rastil picked up, "we will answer: 'We are motivated, responsible and we learn quickly'."
"'We are ready to start immediately!'" they finished in unison and laughed. The first lesson was learned!

Друзья глубоко вдохнули и вошли.
– Good afternoon! – смело начала Милочка. – We are here about the helper position.
Белка, поправляя очки, окинула их взглядом.
– I see. Do you have any experience with inventory (учёт товаров)? – спросила она.
– Not directly, – честно признался Растил, – but I am a fast learner (я быстро учусь). And my friend is very accurate (аккуратная).
– Hmm, – задумалась Белка. – Our nuts and dried berries come from different countries. The boxes are labeled in English. Can you read: "Almonds, from Spain. Dried apricots, from Turkey"?
Мышкин внимательно посмотрела на воображаемую коробку.
– Yes, of course! "Almonds, from Spain. Dried apricots, from Turkey", – уверенно прочла она.
– Good! – кивнула Белка. – But the main thing is to write down numbers in a spreadsheet (таблица). Do you know numbers?
– One, two, three, four, five... – начал Растил.
– ...ten, twenty, thirty, one hundred! – закончила Милочка.
– Perfect! – улыбнулась Белка. – The job is temporary (временная). You will work for three days, four hours a day (четыре часа в день). Your payment (оплата) will be a bag of premium walnuts and a jar of forest honey. Is that acceptable (приемлемо)?
Друзья переглянулись. Мёд – отличная замена варенью!
– Yes, it's acceptable! Thank you for this opportunity! – радостно ответили они.
Их первая job interview (собеседование) прошло успешно!
The first destination was the Dried Fruit Company warehouse, run by an energetic Squirrel. A note hung on the door: "Helper needed for inventory count. Must be attentive. Apply inside."
The friends took a deep breath and entered.
"Good afternoon!" Milochka began boldly. "We are here about the helper position."
The Squirrel, adjusting her glasses, looked them over.
"I see. Do you have any experience with inventory?" she asked.
"Not directly," Rastil admitted honestly, "but I am a fast learner. And my friend is very accurate."
"Hmm," the Squirrel pondered. "Our nuts and dried berries come from different countries. The boxes are labeled in English. Can you read: 'Almonds, from Spain. Dried apricots, from Turkey'?"
Whiskers looked carefully at the imaginary box.
"Yes, of course! 'Almonds, from Spain. Dried apricots, from Turkey'," she read confidently.
"Good!" nodded the Squirrel. "But the main thing is to write down numbers in a spreadsheet. Do you know numbers?"
"One, two, three, four, five..." began Rastil.
"...ten, twenty, thirty, one hundred!" finished Milochka.
"Perfect!" smiled the Squirrel. "The job is temporary. You will work for three days, four hours a day. Your payment will be a bag of premium walnuts and a jar of forest honey. Is that acceptable?"
The friends exchanged glances. Honey was an excellent substitute for jam!
"Yes, it's acceptable! Thank you for this opportunity!" they replied joyfully.
Their first job interview was a success!

Получив мёд и орехи, друзья решили, что этого недостаточно для муки и чая. Они отправились в маленький, но стильный офис Ёжика, который занимался advertising (рекламой) для лесных жителей. На двери красовалась табличка: "Need creative assistant for social media posts. Good sense of humor is a plus." (Требуется креативный помощник для постов в соцсетях. Чувство юмора приветствуется).
– Come in! – раздался голос изнутри.
Ёжик сидел перед монитором, на котором был открыт Telegram.
– So, you want to be my assistants? – спросил он. – I need to write catchy captions (запоминающиеся подписи) for photos of my clients' products. For example, this is a new mushroom sauce from Badger's Pantry. Write something in English for it.
Растил и Милочка задумались.
– How about... "Taste the magic of the forest!" (Попробуй магию леса!) – предложила Мышкин.
– Good! – похвалил Ёжик. – But it's a bit short. We need more engagement (вовлечённость). Ask a question to the audience (аудитория).

Having received honey and nuts, the friends decided it wasn't enough for flour and tea. They went to the small but stylish office of Hedgehog, who was engaged in advertising for forest dwellers. A sign on the door read: "Need creative assistant for social media posts. Good sense of humor is a plus."
"Come in!" a voice came from inside.
Hedgehog was sitting in front of a monitor with Telegram open.
"So, you want to be my assistants?" he asked. "I need to write catchy captions for photos of my clients' products. For example, this is a new mushroom sauce from Badger's Pantry. Write something in English for it."
Rastil and Milochka thought.
"How about... 'Taste the magic of the forest!'" suggested Whiskers.

Для идеального вечера не хватало лишь малинового варенья. Самое лучшее, по слухам, продавал старый Ворон, который занимался import (импортом) экзотических товаров. Его лавка называлась "Raven's Global Delights". Чтобы произвести на него впечатление, нужно было говорить на серьёзном деловом языке.
Ворон был важен и серьёзен.
– What can I do for you? – спросил он, не поднимая глаз от гроссбуха.
– Good day, sir, – начала Милочка, стараясь говорить максимально вежливо. – We are interested in your raspberry jam. We would like to know the price and terms.
– The price is fixed, – ответил Ворон. – Two gold coins per jar. Minimum order – three jars.
– Ой! – вырвалось у Растила. Золотых монет у них не было.
Но Мышкин не сдавалась.
– Sir, we don't have coins. But we can offer a trade (предложить обмен). We have high-quality walnuts and premium tea. Maybe we can discuss a barter deal (бартерная сделка)?
Ворон наконец поднял на них глаза, заинтересованно.
– Barter? Hmm... What's the ratio (соотношение)?
– One jar of jam for one bag of walnuts and ten tea bags, – уверенно предложил Растил, вспоминая слова из учебника про переговоры: "Let's find a mutually beneficial solution" (Давайте найдём взаимовыгодное решение).
Ворон задумался, постукивая клювом по столу.
– The tea is interesting... – проговорил он. – But your offer is low. One jar of jam for one bag of walnuts AND twenty tea bags. That's my final offer. (И это моё окончательное предложение).
Друзья прошептались.
– We accept your offer, – сказала Милочка. – It's a pleasure doing business with you.

For the perfect evening, only raspberry jam was missing. The best one, according to rumors, was sold by old Raven, who was engaged in import of exotic goods. His shop was called "Raven's Global Delights". To impress him, one needed to speak serious business language.
Raven was important and serious.
"What can I do for you?" he asked without looking up from his ledger.
"Good day, sir," Milochka began, trying to speak as politely as possible. "We are interested in your raspberry jam. We would like to know the price and terms."
"The price is fixed," replied Raven. "Two gold coins per jar. Minimum order – three jars."
"Oh!" escaped Rastil. They didn't have gold coins.
But Whiskers didn't give up.
"Sir, we don't have coins. But we can offer a trade. We have high-quality walnuts and premium tea. Maybe we can discuss a barter deal?"
Raven finally looked up at them, interested.

– You know, Мышкин, – задумчиво сказал Растил, помешивая ложкой в чашке, – English is not just a subject. It's a tool. (Английский – это не просто предмет. Это инструмент). Без него мы бы не получили ни эту работу, ни этот чай.

In the evening, when the wind howled and the rain tapped outside the window, it smelled incredibly delicious in the house under the oak tree. A steaming samovar stood on the table. Next to it – a box labeled "Ceylon Black Tea". Milochka was kneading dough from "Premium Wheat Flour", and Rastil was pouring fragrant honey from his jar into bowls and opening a jar of "Imported Raspberry Jam".
"You know, Whiskers," Rastil said thoughtfully, stirring his cup with a spoon, "English is not just a subject. It's a tool. Without it, we wouldn't have gotten this job, or this tea."
"Absolutely right," nodded Milochka, placing the pies on a baking sheet. "It opens doors. And it makes our small world bigger."
When the first, golden pies were ready, the friends sat down at the table. They raised their cups.
"A toast!" said Rastil. "To our hard work, to our friendship, and to the English language that helped us make this evening possible! Cheers!"
"Cheers!" replied Milochka.
They bit into the warm pies, drank the fragrant tea, and felt like the happiest creatures in the world. They didn't just earn their dinner. They earned knowledge that would stay with them forever and help fulfill many, many more cozy dreams.
