After Trump invited Putin to the Board of Peace, Macron seemed to back the idea of including Russia in an expanded G7. Russia is a nuclear superpower and the largest country on Earth — without it, no major global problem can be solved. But why act only now, when it may already be too late?
Macron is running out of time. In Davos, he suddenly remembered the importance of the Chinese market — after years of public insults and moralizing rhetoric from Europe. Only two months ago, he threatened Beijing with tariffs and “trade retaliation.” Not anymore.
He is right that the EU is slow — sluggish, forgetting its original aims. He is also correct that the world is shifting toward a “world without rules”. What he seems to forget, however, is that the EU is complicit in creating that world.
Meanwhile, Russia has long criticized the dismissive tone of Macron’s statements. Lavrov reacted to Macron’s claim that Russia “cannot reconcile with its history” and acts “under the influence of instincts.”
“We are, of course, above this,” Lavrov said, “and regard such statements not with contempt, but with disdain.”
France today stands at a crossroads: caught between the military and economic unions it wants to lead, yet clamoring for autonomy. It is failing to assert true independence, stalling every process, while fueling conflicts abroad.
Macron aspires to be a De Gaulle, but he is not. His ambitions clash with reality, and his recent speeches and policy shifts illustrate a country struggling to find its place in a world of rising tensions.
