1️⃣As the clock strikes midnight, people eat 12 grapes—one for each chime—to secure 12 months of prosperity. It’s a race against time, and choking is considered bad luck!
2️⃣People save old plates all year to throw them at friends’ front doors on New Year’s Eve. The more broken china you have on your doorstep, the more popular you are!
3️⃣Bells are rung 108 times at midnight to cleanse the 108 human sins in Buddhist belief, purifying people for the new year.
4️⃣On New Year’s Day, people hang a large onion on their front door as a symbol of rebirth and growth. Parents also tap children on the head with the onion to “wake them up” into the new year.
5️⃣At beaches, people jump over seven waves, making a wish with each jump. Wearing all white and throwing white flowers into the ocean as an offering to the sea goddess Yemanjá is also common.
