Story: "The Week of a Hundred Letters"

Life for Harry Potter in his small, strange cupboard under the stairs was normally very boring. He lived with the Dursleys, his enormous Aunt Petunia, his huge Uncle Vernon, and their fat son, Dudley. They were Muggles, and they hated anything out of the ordinary.

But one Tuesday, everything changed. The first letter arrived. It was for Harry. Uncle Vernon saw it and snatched it away. The address was written in strange, green ink. Uncle Vernon was furious, so he threw the letter in the bin.

Then, the next day, two more letters came. Because Uncle Vernon was angry, he nailed the mail slot shut. But finally, on Saturday, something enormous happened. Not one, not ten, but what seemed like a hundred letters for Harry shot out of the fireplace! They flew into the kitchen like white birds. It was a huge mess!

Uncle Vernon’s face went red. "We're leaving!" he shouted, because he wanted to escape the letters. So, they all got into the car and drove for hours. Finally, they stopped at a dark, strange hotel on a rock in the middle of the sea. It was cold and windy.

That night, as a storm raged outside, a huge man with a wild, black beard knocked down the door. It was Rubeus Hagrid, the wizard who worked at Hogwarts. He had a letter for Harry, an owl on his shoulder, and a kind smile.

"And finally," said Hagrid, "I can tell yeh, Harry. Yer a wizard."

Harry’s normal life was over. His new, strange and amazing life was just beginning.
