Ann-Sofie Back (born December 10th 1971) is Swedish avant-garde designer and founder of the brand Ann Sofie Back Atelje. She became famous for her “anti-glamour” collections with a touch of irony and humor.
Ann-Sophie Back was born in the ordinary Swedish family, where her parents were not very interested in fashion. However, at the age of seven, the girl showed an interest in beautiful things and helped her parents choose clothes for work and going out.
After completing her studies in St Martins College of Art & Design, Beck collaborated with the English brand Joe Casely-Hayford in London, various brands in Sweden, including Acne Jeans. She did fashion shoots for glossy magazines, including Self-Service and Purple, and also worked with the Miu-Miu brand, preparing an advertising campaign for the Spring-Summer 2001 season.
Actually, Back's style is the most recognizable style in the fashion scene. For instance, she uses neutral colors and hard pieces with avant-garde silhouettes and strange elements. Furthermore, her style is characterized by the use of lingerie details and irony as one of the central components of the collections. Beck often pokes fun at the false seriousness with which many in the industry conduct themselves, as well as the aspirational consumer and the power of celebrity.
For her great work and courage, Ann-Sophie has received many awards. For example, Goldbutton Award. This award is considered very prestigious in Sweden. Also, she was named "Designer of the Year" by the Swedish 'Elle' magazine and to celebrate the success of her brand, Sweden released a stamp featuring her name.
In addition to her work in fashion, Anne-Sophie Back has worked as a fashion designer and editor for magazines such as Self-Service and Purple. After closing her own brand in 2018, Beck worked as a freelancer at electronics company Teenage Engineering.
All of all, Ann-Sofie Back is one of the most important figures not even in Swedish, but in the world fashion scene. Her determination and desire to demonstrate her vision of the world made her a really unique fashion designer.
