Say hello to the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) – a massive neutrino detector that’s just kicked off data collection from 700 meters underground! 🕳✨ This high-tech marvel is capturing the energy spectrum of neutrinos generated by a nuclear power plant 53 km away. And let’s not forget, some of those neutrinos will come from the Sun and distant supernovae too! ☀️💫
This project is HUGE: it boasts a sphere filled with 20,000 tons of liquid scintillator, measuring 35.4 meters in diameter, surrounded by over 45,000 various types of photoelectric tubes. Talk about impressive engineering! 🤯 It’s no wonder it took a while to launch—proposed in 2008, approved in 2013, construction began in 2015, and the detector installation wrapped up in 2021.
