I am working on a project on the most effective method of learning new words in a foreign language for Zetland teenagers and have found a pie chart illustrating the results of a relevant survey. In this essay I will comment on the survey data and express my opinion on the subject of the project.
According to the pie chart, the most common response to the survey question “What is the most effective method of learning new words in a foreign language?” is “Make paper cards with words” (48%). The option “Make sentences with new words” constitutes 18% of the total. The least popular responses are “Use mnemonic techniques” and “Learn lists of words by heart”, at 9% and 5% respectively.
Interestingly, the figure for the option “Use a mobile app” (20%) is significantly lower than the figure for the option “Make paper cards with words” (48%). I find that surprising because mobile applications offer a wide range of exercises with new words, which is important for memorizing. Paper cards cannot provide such a variety of exercises.
Unfortunately, there are some problems that can arise with learning a foreign language. One of them is that there might be nobody around to practice speaking with. A solution could be to use an online speaking exchange platform. There one can arrange a conversation exchange with a native speaker who is learning one’s native language.
In conclusion, I believe that learning foreign languages is extremely important because it allows one to feel more confident in the modern world that is united through global social and professional networks.
