I am doing a project on why some Zetlanders refuse to go to work by bicycle and have found a table with the results of a relevant survey. In this essay I am going to comment on the survey data and express my opinion on the subject of the project.
According to the table, 49% of the respondents refuse to go to work by bicycle because it is too far to go. Unfavorable climate conditions are the major obstacle for 24% of those surveyed. A shortage of roads with bicycle lanes is the reason why 13% of the respondents do not cycle to work.
Predictably, the figure for the option “Few bicycle parking lots” (8%) is significantly lower than the figure for the option “Too far to go” (49%). That is understandable as a bicycle does not take much space and can be parked almost anywhere. A long distance to work is a greater problem. No one wants to spend too much time or get tired on the way to work.
Unfortunately, there is a problem that can arise with riding a bicycle in a big city. Not all roads have bicycle lanes. Cyclists are sometimes forced to share the roads with cars. That is dangerous since traffic in a big city is often heavy. To ride safer, a cyclist should choose a route through quiet streets, yards and parks, where traffic is lighter.
In conclusion, I believe that the best way of getting around a big city is by public transport. It is usually a fast, safe and reliable way to get to any point in the city.
