Mind flow: the English perspective

FROM PLATE TO POLLUTION

Nowadays, there is a range of global environmental problems which may extremely change our life in the near future. The past fifty years we have seen a rapid growth of different kinds of a man-made waste. There is an unsustainable amount of plastic, food, radiation and other types of litter that pollute the Earth. All this is a protracted implication of human irresponsibility for their own world. We ourselves have put the entire planet under a terribly dangerous threat. There is a settled myth that spoilt food can simply decompose and turn out as a fertilizer that is good for land. But the reality is completely opposite. In fact, all the food that rots on the ground makes this ground unusable for growing natural products on it. This way, step by step, we reduce the agricultural area. In addition to that, we harm the biodiversity as well. By downsizing the pleasant land, we take away the fruit plants and the grass, which for some animals is the only source of food.

If we continue damaging the land, lack of natural products that are needed for both humans and animals will be increased dramatically.

If think bigger, we will bump into an even more terrifying situation. According to the above facts, there is an extreme lack of land for growing natural products on. But what if this problem is doubled? It is not only about the land but also about the natural products themselves. People waste an unbelievable amount of water on producing food that is simply thrown away, whereas it should be used for agriculture. In other words, a vast amount of water is wasted and lost on uneaten food while plants and animals are deprived from it. Such an unfair water distribution in favor of food producing companies will lead to a serious lack of water and make a lot of areas unsuitable for living.

To sum up, there is a list of other problems caused by food waste. But we already see a huge impact and damage. In conclusion, I would like to encourage peopleto finally change their superficial view on such a significant environmental issue. People should be more attentive to how they use the given resources. If every person watches our planet, we will be able to unite and get rid of the food waste.

I would like to share my point of view on why this matters to students and educators.

This article isn’t just another environmental rant — it’s a valuable resource for English learners and teachers. If you’re a student, you can:

  • Expand your vocabulary with terms like "biodiversity," "agricultural area," and "unsustainable amount of waste."
  • Practice critical thinking by analyzing cause-and-effect relationships in the text.
  • Use it for debates or essays on ecology, sustainability, or consumerism.

For teachers, it’s a ready-made lesson tool:

  • Discuss the structure of an argumentative essay.
  • Assign research tasks (e.g., "Find local food waste statistics").
  • Encourage group projects like "Zero-Waste Management Solutions.”
