A warning about the approach of Milton to the state of Florida appeared earlier this week. The disaster may hit the region as early as today, October 9. At the same time, just ten days ago, Florida was shaken by Hurricane Helen, which killed 277 people and from which residents did not have time to recover.
Hurricane preparations began on Monday, October 7. So, in Florida, they announced the cancellation of more than 1.5 thousand passenger and cargo flights, and the port of Tampa was closed. Residents were advised to leave on their own and take shelter in nearby shelters. To avoid traffic jams on highways, tolls on key highways have been canceled. In addition, motorists were allowed to move along the roadsides. However, despite the measures introduced, traffic jams still accumulated on the roads, and the shelves of shops and gas stations were instantly empty.
"Milton" is considered one of the strongest cyclones recorded in the state. The storms caused the most damage:
• Hurricane Andrew. In 1992, it claimed the lives of more than 65 people and caused more than $27 billion in damage. South Florida was particularly hard hit, including the Miami and Homestead areas.
• Hurricane Charlie. In 2004, the disaster led to the deaths of 15 people in Florida. It caused serious damage on the west coast of the state, especially in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda.
• Hurricane Katrina. The storm is considered the most destructive for the United States. It hit the Mexican and southern coasts in 2005. Then almost 2 thousand people became victims of the elements, and New Orleans was almost washed away. The economic damage, according to 2007 estimates, amounted to more than $108 billion.
• Hurricane Michael. A category five storm hit the Panhandle in Florida in 2018. As a result of the disaster, 74 people were killed. The areas of Mexico Beach and Panama City were the most severely affected.
• Hurricane Ian. In 2022, the disaster affected the southwestern coast of Florida, in particular Fort Myers and Naples. More than 150 people died, making it one of the deadliest in Florida's history.
