A landslide is a terrible phenomenon that happens in mountainous areas. It can happen due to water or an earthquake.
One such horrific incident was in Aberfan on October 21, 1966. The coal mine was located next to the school. October of that year was very rainy and the ground was washed away.
The Aberfan school, where were classes, and nearby houses were completely buried under the landslide.
Local people immediately started to dig up the site of he collapse with their hands and garden sholevs. 20 minutes later local miners arrived and began digging.
144 people died in a small village, 116 of them were children
Some families found their dead relatives only a few days after the disaster.
The tragedy in Aberfan has become one of the worst for both Wales and the United Kingdom.
