NATO will be at 'war with Russia' if it authorizes Ukraine to use long-range missiles, says Putin

The United States said it is working to authorize the use of US missiles by Ukraine. For the Russian president, the measure would change the 'nature of the conflict'.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (12) that NATO will be "at war with Russia" if it authorizes Ukraine to use long-range missiles. This possibility is being evaluated by the United States and its allies.

NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance composed of the United States and European countries. Ukraine is not part of the group, but is supported by NATO in the war.

Currently, the vast majority of Ukraine's allies authorize the country to use the weapons of foreign partners only for the defense of its own territory.

According to Putin, any change in this policy "would significantly change the very nature of the conflict". In view of this, he warned that the country will make "appropriate decisions based on the threats".

"It would mean that NATO countries, the United States, European countries, are at war with Russia," he said in an interview. In August, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he could only stop Russia's advance if allies authorized the use of long-range weapons. A change in stance by the United States and its allies began to gain momentum after the US government said Iran was supplying missiles to Russia.
