Disputed Strike Calls Affect the Yankees' Eighth Inning

Оглавление

The Yankees didn't need an incorrect umpire call in their most recent loss on Thursday night because they are currently having trouble both at bat and on the mound.

Jose Trevino batted with runners on first and second and one out in the eighth inning of New York's 5-4 loss to the Rays. Before left-hander Colin Poche launched a 91 mph fastball that was clearly above the strike zone, Trevino worked a 3-0 count. The plate umpire Edwin Moscoso ruled a strike as the Yankees catcher was about to take his base.

Poche would complete the count and deliver another fastball, this time clocked at 91 mph, below the strike zone. Moscoso called a strike once more. The Yankees were able to get a key second out instead of loading the bases with one out.

That inning would see no runs scored by the Yankees.

Boone and Trevino Reflect on the At-Bat

When asked what he appreciated about pinch-hitting Trevino in the moment, Yankees manager Aaron Boone gave his thoughts after the game.

"I liked the ball five that Trevi ends up taking that ended up being strike three," the veteran Yankee captain said.

When Boone was asked if it was "inevitable" that he or someone else would be thrown, Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake was tossed later in that same inning during a Rays pitching change for arguing with Moscoso.

“A big call in that spot. I thought Trevy put a good at-bat, was real patient. Unfortunate," stated Boone. “I don’t know about inevitable or not.”

When asked about the at-bat, Trevino responded briefly following the defeat.

“Frustrating but probably should have hit the 3-1 [pitch] or something,” he said.

Yankees' Mentality Moving Forward

The seasoned catcher discussed how his team is feeling during this difficult time, although he claimed not to have had a chance to look at the 3-2 pitch that led to a strikeout.

“It’s been tough for us a little bit. We have to keep going. Nobody is going to feel sorry for us,” Trevino said. “If anything, people want to see this. We’re the Yankees. People don’t care. If we win, yea we should’ve won. If we lose, they like that. We’ll get back to where we were and play with that chip on our shoulder.”

Upcoming Series Against the Orioles

New York, for all its troubles, has a chance to end the series ahead of schedule with three games left against the AL East-leading Orioles in Baltimore before the Yankees head into the All-Star break.

Boone wants the Yankees to play better, not because of Baltimore's recent struggles or if his club should consider itself fortunate.

“We gotta take care of our own house. We gotta get going in the right direction right now. That’s where the focus is right now,” Boone said. “We’re getting to the All-Star break, it’s about us playing well. We can’t worry too much about that stuff.”

The Orioles lead the Yankees by two games going into this weekend's series, which begins on Friday.
