The main purpose of this book, then, is to assist librarians, students, and others interested in psi phenomena to select wisely from this mass of material currently flooding the market, as well as from older material, by providing an annotated list of worthwhile books in English on parapsychology and related areas of study.
(It should be pointed out that books on the subject are primarily of value as introductions or overviews. Actually, the best sources of information are not found in books at all, but in the papers published in the serious parapsychological periodicals (see the titles listed in the first section of Part IV).
Moreover, most of the worthwhile books on parapsychology are based to a greater or lesser extent on material originally appearing in the journal literature.)
Additionally, we present sections on parapsychology in encyclopedias, on organizations, periodicals, and significant events in academic acceptance of the field, and on terminology for those desiring further sources of information and more background knowledge about the development and current status of parapsychology as a scientific discipline.

It is essential that the user realize that this is not a new edition of Parapsychology: Sources of Information, compiled by my colleague Laura A. Dale (now deceased) and myself in 1973 and published by Scarecrow Press. Since that time, many reputable publications dealing with parapsychology have been published, new terms have been introduced, centers have been organized, and new periodicals initiated. Too much has happened to warrant simply an updated edition of Sources. Instead, I have opted to produce Parapsychology: New Sources of Information, which is conceived as a continuation of Sources. The cutoff point for information supplied in Sources was 1972. This volume covers information available from 1973 through July 1, 1989, with one 1990 book 803a] inserted at the last minute because of its value and to fill a blank page.
The fact that many more items in each category have been covered in New Sources than in Sources is due both to the expansion of activity in parapsychology itself (especially as regards terminology and degrees) and to the fact that the overriding policy governing Sources was selectivity, whereas in New Sources it is to indicate all possible sources of information on all aspects of parapsychology that can be considered to be reasonably reliable.

This book is more than an annotated bibliography of important books published during the last fifteen years; it is also a guide to organizations and periodicals in the field. It contains a chapter on parapsychology and U.S. government interest. Not the least valuable is a chronological list of theses on parapsychology. A more personal touch is evident in the section on "New Views of Parapsychology and Parapsychological Phenomena," which reflects the author’s 35—year association with parapsychology, and "Information on Parapsychology in General Sources of Information," which reflects her experience as a reference librarian. Other useful materials in the book include addresses of publishers not readily available and lists of books containing glossaries and illustrations.

This collection includes papers selected from parapsychological journals plus one from a related field. An effort was made to choose articles which would provide reliable, in-depth information on parapsychology and encourage serious students to turn to the periodical literature of the subject. Although everyone is aware that a vast quantity of books on parapsychology is being published today, fewer people realize that almost all of the important and reliable work is published in specialized periodicals, and even fewer know what these periodicals are. Yet no one who has a serious interest in the subject, especially those who want to try their hand at research, can afford not to be familiar with the contents of the major journals, at least.
Thus this sampler is aimed at providing information on parapsychology, stimulating interest in the subject, and encouraging students to turn to the all-important periodical literature.
