According to legend, the main tower of the castle inspired Walt Disney for the architecture of Sleeping Beauty's castle, as it can be discovered in the Disneyland theme park in California. He would have noticed its elegant bell tower in a photo taken by an American soldier in 1944…
A certain Jean-Edouard-Jules Van Parys, son-in-law of the famous Ernest Solvay and owner of a villa, located not far from the old church which had become too cramped, expressed to the priest and his parish his desire to build a castle, at the place where the new church is to be built… To do this, he offers significant compensation to the priest of Esneux in order to see the new building installed in the lower part of the village. The latter refuses. This is without taking into account the determination of the owner of the place who, after fighting, obtained the required permission to build. A project of this scale requires the know-how of an internationally renowned architect! Jean-Edouard-Jules Van Parys entrusted the project to Paul Saintenoy from Brussels. The castle, built in 1904, juxtaposes a Renaissance-style facade, roofs topped with fine Gothic-style turrets and a medieval-style tower, an unparalleled building for the 'era.
A SAGA LIKE NO OTHER… In 1940, the premises remained unoccupied. The Germans seized the castle between 1940 and 1945, occupied it until the resistance, then American troops took possession.
It was in 1982 that the town of Esneux bought the castle. Major renovation work was begun on the roof.
