Dracula in Easy English. Chapter 2. Part 1. «The Great Door is Opened». Jumbled text:

The paragraphs in the following text are all in the wrong order. Put them in the correct order and watch the video Dracula in Easy English. Chapter 2. Part 1. «The Great Door is Opened» to check your answer.

(1) “I stood in silence at the door of Castle Dracula and I did not know what to do. There was no bell or knocker on the door and I didn’t believe anyone would be able to hear my voice through these walls. I waited and waited and I felt lots of doubts and fears. What sort of place had I come to, and among what kind of people? What sort of dark adventure was it?

(2) “I am Dracula; and welcome, Mr. Harker, to my house. Come in; the night air is cold, and you probably need to eat and rest.” As he was speaking, he put the lamp on a hook on the wall, and stepping out, took my luggage.”

(3) Within, stood a tall old man, clean shaven except for a long white moustache, and dressed in black from head to foot, without any colour about him anywhere. He held in his hand an antique silver lamp, throwing long shadows. The old man motioned me in with his right hand with a polite gesture, saying in excellent English, but with a strange intonation:—

(4) I began to rub my eyes and pinch myself to see if I was awake. It all seemed like a bad dream to me, and I wanted to wake up and find myself at home, with the light of dawn coming in through the windows. But I felt the pain from pinching , and my eyes were not lying to me I was really awake and among the Carpathians. All I could do now was to be patient, and to wait for the morning.

(5) “Welcome to my house! Enter freely and of your own will!” He did not move to meet me, but stood like a statue, as though his gesture of welcome had turned him into stone. The moment, however, that I had stepped over the threshold, he moved suddenly forward, and holding out his hand grasped mine so strongly that it hurt. His hand felt as cold as ice—more like the hand of a dead than a living man. Again he said:—

(6) “Welcome to my house. Come freely. Go safely; and leave something of the happiness you bring!” The strength of the handshake was so similar to that which I had noticed in the driver, whose face I had not seen, that for a moment I doubted if it were not the same person to whom I was speaking; so to make sure, I asked:—

(7) Just as I had come to this conclusion I heard heavy steps behind the great door, and saw some light coming through little holes in the door. Then there was the sound of chains and massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with the loud noise as if it had not been used for a long time, and the great door opened.

(8) “Count Dracula?” He bowed politely and replied:—

A question for discussion: Why, do you think, Count Dracula could not move before Jonathan Harker entered his house?
