At the threshold of the new season we want to tell the history of observations of the nest of white-tailed eagles Chulman (male) and Kama (female) from the Nizhnyaya Kama National Park. If you are newcomer, we have two articles for you on how to distinguish Chulman from Kama.

The nest is located on a pine tree at a height of 35 metres off the ground. Its size is 1.3 m by 90 cm. It was from it that our work on online observations of birds of prey in Tatarstan began in 2018. Unfortunately, the breeding season ended with nothing, but some videos have survived: https:/clck.ru/38Rzoa

In 2022, the pair successfully raised two chicks, which both had been ringed. Watch a short video report from the nest, taken by ornithologist Rinur Bekmansurov on that day:

In 2023, the eagles managed to grow one, but a real strapping fellow - a young eagle, who was given the Turkic name Yar (affectionately - Yarik). Mating of Chulman and Kama in the nest occurred on February 28

The long hoped for egg appeared on the night from 24 to 25 March. The heir hatched on 28-29 April. He was fed a fish and began to grow and train his wings. Soon the little gray lump had grown into a real dinosaur. As observers joked, he grew not in days, but in minutes.

On June 1, Child Protection Day, ornithologist Rinur Bekmansurov came to congratulate Yar and present a couple of rings not forgetting to measure his parameters. The left paw now has a silver-green ring with black signs AB-831, the right black with white signs H-831.

And then it was time to prepare for life on his own. Mr. Kamich learned to shift branches and cones, jump, grab prey, balance and hang in the air during toss drills. The first exit outside the nest happened on July 3. The first flight - July 9.

And now the nest became empty... Mom Kama and Daddy Chulman used to bring fish into it a little bit from force of habit, looking sadly at the empty branches, looking for the child, but Yar, feeling taste of freedom, did not appear.

Yarik returned home only after 7 days - 16 July! He walked enough and flew to his parents to stay. He ate tightly, cleaned the nest, dug himself a hole, calmed down and felt at home. And after - flew to explore the heavenly expanse and write his life story. He was still visiting the nest, but the last time we saw him in 2023 was on November 26.

In autumn and winter Kamychi does not often please observers by visiting the nest. But the new season has already begun. Kama and Chulman are in place: guarding their possessions, repairing the nest and filling the area with their love cries.

Join us in watching these sometimes quarrelsome, but cute birds. And don’t let their menacing appearance scare you)

The project is being implemented by the Nizhnyaya Kama National Park together with Tatneft and volunteers’ assistance. Head of the project: Rinur Bekmansurov.
