S1.E3 ∙ The Robbery

1. Arbitrary - not seeming to be based on a reason, system or plan and sometimes seeming unfair (несправедливый, произвольный)

Examples: The choice of players for the team seemed completely arbitrary.

2. Platoon - a small group of soldiers that is part of a company and commanded by a lieutenant (взвод)

Examples: Three squads make up a platoon, which is commanded by a lieutenant.

3. Lease - a legal agreement that allows you to use a building, a piece of equipment or some land for a period of time, usually in return for rent (аренда, лизинг)

Examples: She is on the lease. A long-term lease is considered to be a lease longer than 24 months.

4. Double-parked - to park a car or other vehicle next to one that is already parked in a street (парковаться вторым рядом)

Examples: be double-parked I'll have to rush—I'm double-parked.

5. Spatula - a tool with a broad flat part that is not sharp, used for mixing and spreading things, especially in cooking and painting or a thin flat instrument that doctors use for pressing the tongue down when they are examining somebody’s throat (лопатка, шпатель)

Examples: You know, I'm sure Dad has a spatula somewhere for that. Can I borrow a spatula for cooking pancakes?

6. Crook - a dishonest person, criminal (аферист, жулик)

Examples: That salesman is a real crook. Quite a few of them are crooks who steal money.

7. Put up with somebody/something- to accept somebody/something that is annoying, unpleasant, etc. without complaining (терпеть)

Examples: Many can't put up with this pressure and give up after only a few days. To put up with such behavior or not is up to every woman to decide.

8. Flip a coin - to throw something somewhere with a sudden quick movement, especially using your thumb and/or fingers (подкинуть монету)

Examples: They flipped a coin to decide who would get the ticket. If you flip a coin enough times, both heads and tails (орел и решка)will come up an equal number of times.

9. The odds - the degree to which something is likely to happen (шансы)

Examples: We know the odds are against us.

10. B.L.T. - A sandwich containing a bacon, lettuce and tomato filling. The perfect complement to a cup of tea. (сэндвич с беконом, салатом и томатом)

Examples: I could really go for a B.L.T. The cafe down the road do a really nice one.

11. Mope- ​to spend your time doing nothing and feeling sorry for yourself (ныть, хандрить)

Examples: As a result, you may just mope until someone asks you what's wrong.
