1. Cornea – the clear layer that covers and protects the outer part of the eye (роговица)

9. Permafrost - a layer of soil that is permanently frozen, in very cold regions of the world (вечная мерзлота)

Examples: Permafrost of Yakutia keeps many mysteries attracting tourists from all over the world, who are interested in ancient fauna.

10. Imperative - very important and needing immediate attention or action (необходимый, обязательный, приказной)

Examples:

imperative (that…) It is absolutely imperative that we finish by next week.

imperative (to do something) It is imperative to continue the treatment for at least two months.

11. Thaw- (of ice and snow) to turn back into water after being frozen, melt (оттаивать)

Examples: The soil was slowly thawing out after the long cold winter.

12. Talk sense – try to persuade someone using convincing arguments (вразумить, говорить осмысленно)

Examples: If anyone can talk sense into my dad, it's you.

I'm glad we're finally beginning to talk sense.

13. Fit/fill the bill - to be what is needed in a particular situation or for a particular purpose (отвечать всем требованиям)

Examples: A helpful friend suggested this place might fit the bill.

On paper, several of the applicants fit the bill.

14. Break the news (to somebody) - to be the first to tell somebody some bad news (сообщать новости, чаще плохие)

Examples: There's no easy way to break the news.

15. Delirium - a mental state where somebody becomes excited and not able to think or speak clearly, usually because of illness (бред)

Examples: Delirium can be easily confused with dementia due to similar symptoms.

16. Self-inflicted wound – damage you do to yourself (нанесенные себе раны, самострел)

Examples: That's a self-inflicted wound that could have been avoided.

17. Taunt somebody - to try to make somebody angry or upset by saying unkind things about them, laughing at their failures, etc. (дразнить, подшучивать)

Examples: The other kids continually taunted him about his appearance.

18. Keep a/the lid on something - to keep something secret or hidden to keep something under control (сдерживать)

Examples: The government is keeping the lid on inflation.
