Irregular Verbs

In English Grammar Land there live a lot of verbs. They are the most important and powerful members of grammar society. All of them are of different ages and origin and have different attitude to the rules of their grammar world.

The verbs of middle age are ordinary and regular, they agree to follow the rules. They believe that law provides the safety and stability. Moreover, it guarantees the mutual understanding. The rules are easy to follow. Just wear particular uniform to declare your intention and it’s enough for others to see your point of view.

Nevertheless, as in every diverse country, there are some inhabitants who doubt that the existing rules are the only way to maintain peace. These verbs are called irregular.

1️⃣ Rebels prefer to disobey laws, they proclaim freedom and simplicity and reject to wear any kind of uniform. They would rather stay themselves in any situation than let change their unique personality. As you can guess, these verbs are teenagers of grammar world. If you dare to force them to wear uniform beware of their indomitable rage. Thanks grammar god the number of such is not large. They are, for example:

  • cost - cost - cost
  • put - put - put

2️⃣ Another group of verbs consists of foreigners of different nationalities. The amount of verbs varies depending on the expatriate community but they have one particular feature in common: they still continue to follow the rules of their motherland. (I have to prompt you: “teach”, “sell”, “pay” and some others that have similar V2 and V3). Regular verbs consider them to be naive aliens in grammar land but people like them ability to express everyday meanings. One of these communities is:

  • bring - brought - brought
  • buy - bought - bought
  • catch - caught - caught
  • think - thought - thought

3️⃣ One more group of verbs are merely toddlers. Don’t blame them for good imagination and forgive their creative thinking. They are so young and naive that just don’t know any rules. They appreciate every moment of your speech and enjoy the life. It’s not their fault they do their best to be happy. Still some of them are alike each other. Look at these little twins:

  • sing - sang - sung
  • ring - rang - rung

in this group of verbblers:

  • run - ran - run
  • begin - began - begun
  • drink - drank - drunk
  • swim - swam - swum

Or at another one:

  • drive - drove - driven
  • give - gave- given
  • eat - ate - eaten
  • fall - fell - fallen
  • forget - forgot - forgotten
  • speak - spoke - spoken
  • take - took - taken

4️⃣ At last let’s apply to the most respected and honourable members of the verb society. They are the elders who are essential part of every speech. No one can do without this sacred trinity. They even help other verbs a lot. That’s the reason they can afford to be extraordinary and unique. Since you can’t avoid using them anyway, you had better get acquainted with them once and for all. I dare to present you multi-faceted verb “be”, the almighty assistant “do” and greatest mastermind “go”.

  • be (am, is, are) - was/were - been
  • do - did - done
  • go - went - gone
