"The founding of the Russian Gymnastics Society football team (one of the oldest sports societies in Russia) was no later than 1897, when the Russkoe Slovo newspaper (July 30, 1897) gave a note about that event. The society itself was founded on May 4, 1883, on the basis of the private gymnastics hall opened in 1881 in the Redlich house on Strastnoy Boulevard (house 12). The society was founded under the influence of the Pan-Slavic "Sokol movement" with the aim of promoting the "Sokolsk gymnastics" and then other sports: fencing, wrestling, figure skating, skating, football, hockey, lawn tennis, boxing, skis, Athletics, cycling ...
In early 1922, a group of enthusiasts headed by I. Artemyev , N. Starostin, and K. Kvashinin received permission to demolish several abandoned houses in the Presnenskoye outpost area for the subsequent construction of a stadium here. Concerts were organized to raise funds. In the spring of 1922 stands, fences, changing rooms and the field itself were ready.

In the spring of 1922 stands, fences, changing rooms and the field itself were ready. At the same time, the oldest in Moscow physical culture and sports society is renamed: “Russian Gymnastics Society” (RGO Sokol). At first, in a dispute that occurred in March 1922, I. Artemyev, who came from KF S. (Sokolniki football team) called for the team to be called "Red Presnya". But the numerous athletes who joined him, including the footballers of the RGO Sokol, were categorically opposed, arguing that the RGO had a lot of merit, traditions and experience, and it was the name of the RGO Sokol that should be taken on board. And in the end they stopped on the compromise variant - “Moscow sports club” (“MKS”), but a year later the club was renamed “Red Presnya”, as originally proposed by Artemyev. Until 1935, the team performed under the names "Red Presnya", "Pisheviki", "Dukat" and "Promkoperatsiya". From November 14, 1934 - "Spartak".

On April 19, 1935, on the basis of the football team, a voluntary sports association of cooperative workers was created. The name “Spartak” for this society, as well as for his football team, was suggested by Nikolai Starostin in honor of the leader of the rebel Roman slaves , as a symbol of the struggle for freedom…"
