A neurologist called bad teeth one of the factors of Alzheimer's disease

Neurologist Cherdak: Sore teeth and gums can lead to Alzheimer's disea The cause of the development of Alzheimer's disease can be bacteria-pathogens of the inflammatory process in the oral cavity, accompanying problems with teeth and gums. This was told to Izvestia on September 21, on the International Day of Dissemination of Information about Alzheimer's Disease, by a neurologist, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Neurogeriatrics of the N.I. Pirogov RNMC, associate professor, Candidate of Medical Sciences Maria Cherdak.
She noted that recent scientific studies have shown that people suffering from inflammatory diseases of the teeth and gums are subsequently more likely to develop Alzheimer's disease.
"Scientists believe that microorganisms affecting the teeth and oral mucosa, directly or through the body's immune response, can trigger the formation of amyloid protein, which leads to damage to brain cells and causes this disease," explained the Cherdak. Other studies, she said,

The cause of the development of Alzheimer's disease can be bacteria-pathogens of the inflammatory process in the oral cavity, accompanying problems with teeth and gums.

Other studies, she said, also confirm the link between the condition of the oral cavity and the development of neurodegenerative diseases. The causes of poor teeth and gums — bad habits, unbalanced nutrition and poor hygiene — are important risk factors for dementia.

In this regard, the doctor recommended that elderly people more closely monitor the health of the oral cavity and, if necessary, engage in prosthetics. After all, in addition to infection, the absence of teeth can cause malnutrition and lack of nutrients necessary for brain health, which in itself negatively affects the health of the nervous system.

"In general, the theory of the infectious origin of Alzheimer's disease has long been considered by scientists. Previously, it was suggested that this disease is associated with herpes-viral infections. Additionally, the role of infections in the development of brain diseases is indicated by the fact that vaccination of elderly people against influenza, as well as a number of other infectious diseases significantly reduces the risk of developing dementia," the neurologist summed up.
