Statement: getting marks does not motivate students to study.
There's often a situation appearing when students study badly and absolutely don't care about marks they get at school. Teachers and parents get angry with them, and they feel even worse. Let's talk about it a little bit deeper.
As far as I know, teenagers can't plan their future because their mind works in a different way from one of an adult. They just don't understand they'll need it when they grow up! Also, teenagers enjoy breaking rules! This way they're trying to prove all adults they're not going to follow these rules. That's called separation. So, it's almost impossible to make a teenager study well without any consequences.
On the other side, there are students who are ready to do everything to get "good" and "excellent". Some of them can't study badly because of a low self-esteem - if they don't achieve good results, they start to be angry with themselves. They can be afraid of a punishment from their parents too, so they're trying to do their best, although choosing the way of suffering from big quantity of work they have to do.
I believe in the second theory. Nowadays teens are more and more worried about their marks and try to figure out with the studies. This situation happens really often and it definitely has to be changed.
If you have problems and you're too worried about marks, you probably should ask for some help before these problems increase.
