Take the word "notice" which can be used in a variety of different ways. Instead of learning by heart all of its possible meanings, try to pay attention to the phrases this word is mostly used in like: "hand in my notice", "seem to notice", "on such short notice" or "eviction notice". Such phrases are prefabricated chunks that are ready to be used to communicate ideas rather than just train your memory.
