I never did very well at school, so when all my friends left for university, I just got a job. Since then, I've realized that a degree is useful, but I can't get into university with my grades. So this year, I'm doing a foundation corse at college full-time. If I pass it, I'll be able to apply for university. Hopefully, they will take me seriously.
Melissa finished her degree in environmental science two years ago, and so did hundreds of other people. It's so hard to get a job in this profession. My friends got jobs unconnected to the environment, but I didn't want that. So I'm back at university now, studying water management with a higher level degree in a specialist subject. I'm working for a chemical company as a lab technician, and my manager is keen to train up their employees and keep them, not to keep hiring new staff. So the company is paying for my course. I work three days a week and go to university for two days. The course takes a year longer to complete than the full-time one, but I'm delighted that I don't have to pay for it and can earn money at the same time as studying.
