I never did very well at school, so when all my friends left for university, I just got a job. Since then, I've realized that a degree is useful, but I can't get into university with my grades. So this year, I'm doing a foundation corse at college full-time. If I pass it, I'll be able to apply for university. Hopefully, they will take me seriously.

Melissa finished her degree in environmental science two years ago, and so did hundreds of other people. It's so hard to get a job in this profession. My friends got jobs unconnected to the environment, but I didn't want that. So I'm back at university now, studying water management with a higher level degree in a specialist subject. I think I'll have more chances.

When I finished school, I didn't think I would be able to afford university. But then I found lots of universities offer distance learning courses, and that idea seemed perfect. Not only are those courses cheaper, but I also don't have to pay for accommodation. I guess it's not the real university experience, but it's good enough.

I'm working for a chemical company as a lab technician, and my manager is keen to train up their employees and keep them, not to keep hiring new staff. So the company is paying for my course. I work three days a week and go to university for two days. The course takes a year longer to complete than the full-time one, but I'm delighted that I don't have to pay for it and can earn money at the same time as studying.

I used to study at this university a long time ago. I did a postgraduate course here. I only discovered last year that they do informal classes for members of the public. Last term, I did a class on the history of art, just for three hours a week on Friday night. It was lots of fun. Now
