Letter to a magazine - Making decisions

To the editor:

It was with great pleasure that I read different ideas in the article devoted to decision-making which appeared in your last week’s edition. I was very pleased to learn that the readers were invited to give their opinions on the subject.

Making decisions is definitely something that we all have to do on an everyday basis. These decisions vary significantly in the importance we attach to them, and include both minor mundane choices, such as what outfit to wear on a given day, as well as crucial dilemmas connected with career, relationships or children.

What I find especially curious is what prompts us to make a choice. Your article offers a number of tentative explanations: other people’s advice, auto-suggestion, subconscious aspirations and, finally, personality. It is the latter that I consider to be of paramount importance. Drawing on my life experience - resilient, pro-active, and resolute individuals tend to take decisions in an effective and responsibly way, whereas people with low self-esteem, disorganised and prone to procrastination frequently find it hard to make up their mind.

Another thing which I find especially engrossing is the author’s recommendations on how to ease the process of decision-making. One of them is to draw up a list of pros and cons. While I agree that this is a workable method, I still go along with the writer’s view that one’s gut feeling should be the prime indicator that one is on the right track. I dare suggest one more viable trick. Whenever pondering as for which variant to choose, one should try to envision themselves already living with the first option and then, accordingly, with the second. Whichever choice feels comfortable and genius, that could in all probability be the correct one.

In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to your magazine for the thoughtfully chosen and highly diverting materials you always indulge your dedicated readers with.
