Introduction
The 33-acre Alexandria Zoological Park is a zoo that is situated in Alexandria, Louisiana. It is maintained by the Division of Public Works on behalf of its owner, the City of Alexandria.
It initially appeared in front of the public in 1926. There live a little over 500 animals. The zoo in Bringhurst Park first opened its doors as a collection of cages in 1926.
Wildlife
There are a variety of animals on exhibit, including a common hippopotamus, lions, striped hyenas, California sea lions, zebras, scimitar-horned oryx, bears, monkeys, Dromedary camels, Barbary sheep, black leopards, spotted hyenas, golden hyenas, Bactrian camels, and llamas.
A museum, a section for "birds and small mammals," and a reptile house are further features of the zoo. A few of the endemic Egyptian species that can be found in the reptile house include the Nile crocodile, the Egyptian cobra, and the critically endangered Egyptian tortoise. Hawks, eagles, falcons, African crested porcupines, and Egyptian mongooses live in a lot of aviaries.
Animal Rights
By the early 2000s, the zoo had suffered from neglect and was in bad shape.
Animal Aid Egypt and a group of volunteers were starting to make changes to the animals' living conditions. They convinced zoo authorities to build shade for the elephant and strengthen her sleeping area in addition to allowing her to roam free during the day.
They collaborated with the keepers to improve the chimpanzees' meals, provide stimulation to their outdoor cages, and try to have wooden floors placed in their night quarters.
In February 2015, a group of zoogoers watched and laughed as two men broke into the Alexandria Zoo and beat up hamadryas baboons with sticks. Most of the monkeys climbed to the top of the enclosure for safety. Although the audience laughed heartily and applauded, the men beat up others.
The two males spent a considerable amount of time in the monkey enclosure, but zoo security did not intervene. The people ultimately left the area without being captured or facing any punishment.
