The American Orion spacecraft circled the Moon
Moscow. November 21. INTERFAX.EN – The American Orion spacecraft flew around the Moon as part of a test unmanned flight on Monday, NASA reported.
The agency conducted a live video broadcast using a camera mounted on one of the ship's solar panels.
In the area of the Far side of the Moon, which is not visible from Earth, at 07:44 on the time of the East Coast of the USA (15:44 Moscow time), the main engine was turned on for two and a half minutes on the ship. Following this, about 13 minutes later, Orion flew at an altitude of only 130 km from the surface of the Earth's natural satellite. As a result of the maneuver, the ship began to gradually move away from the Moon.
According to NASA, the orbit of the Orion spacecraft over the Moon, in particular, passed over the landing area in the past of the American manned Apollo 11.
Another engine start is expected on Friday to enter a distant retrograde orbit with a height of 64 thousand km from the surface of the Moon, where the ship will stay for six days.
Then, after the descent from it, Orion will make another close flyby of the Moon on December 5, after which it will head to Earth.
The Artemis program was unveiled in September 2020. Its main goal is the return of American astronauts to the lunar surface 53 years after the last mission, the construction of a lunar station and the preparation of conditions for the possible colonization of the Moon in the future.
