Growing up in a working-class family in England, Tolhurst developed an interest in music at a young age. He learned to play the drums and formed a band with his childhood friend Robert Smith, which would eventually become The Cure.
In the early days of The Cure, Tolhurst played drums and keyboards and helped to shape the band's sound. They gained a following with their unique blend of gloomy post-punk and pop sensibilities and became one of the most influential bands of the 80s.

With the help of his family and support from the recovery community, Tolhurst was able to get sober and begin rebuilding his life. He now works as a producer and musician and is an advocate for addiction recovery.
