Hello. Today I want to tell you about Earthquake in Armenia. It’s called Spitak's earthquake also known as Leninakan earthquake.
It happened on the 7th of December, 1988 at 11:41 a.m. Yerevan time in the Northwest.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 6.8—7.2
The earthquake lasted only half a minute, and 26 thousand people were forever buried under the rubble of their houses. In a matter of seconds, the cities of Spitak, Gyumri, Stepanavan, Kirovakan were completely destroyed, 58 villages turned into ruins.
The USSR and 111 other countries of the world came to help Armenia. All these countries Israel, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Lebanon, Norway, France, Germany and Switzerland helped Armenia with medicine, food, equipment.
On December 7, 1988, one of the most terrible earthquakes in history was in Armenia.
My mum was there and she remembers that horrible day.
