Zoro & Nami Are Luffy's Most Important Companions – And Always Have Been

Zoro is the first person Luffy recruits for his crew. He's also the only member who was blackmailed into joining. He once told Luffy that if Luffy impeded his dream, Luffy would have to answer for it. In less than a year of sailing together, Zoro became willing to die for Luffy and has proven the depth of his loyalty over and over. Nami isn't actually the second recruit to the crew. She didn't really join until after Arlong was defeated, and while she grew to care for the Straw Hats before that, she always intended to leave. Nami was the first person to refuse to believe Kaido killed Luffy. She wholeheartedly believes in Luffy and his dream. Luffy trusts her to guide the crew in all the ways he can't. While all the crew participates in this in some capacity, Nami and Zoro are both the most consistent about it. Nami is very practical and will tell Luffy no when needed. Zoro has high expectations for Luffy as a captain. While he spends much of his time being just as frivolous as Luffy, he would leave the crew if Luffy doesn't lead right.
