14. Curly Sue

-14

Bill Dancer and his nine-year-old daughter, Susan (nicknamed "Curly Sue"), live on the streets, earning a living from small scams. Bill says: "We do this without breaking any laws. More precisely, without violating good laws...". One day, Bill fakes a small car accident, pretending to be hit by a car. The driver of this car turns out to be divorce lawyer Gray Ellison, an unmarried and successful woman. Gray offers Bill and Sue dinner as an apology. Soon, in the same underground parking lot, Gray hits them again, this time for real. Out of guilt, she takes Bill and Sue to her home, much to the anger of her boyfriend, Walker. In his opinion, Gray should not have allowed herself to be manipulated by homeless people, but should have left them on the street.

For Susan and Bill, a different life begins — a clean bed, home-cooked food and comfort. But Gray is concerned about Sue's level of development: at the age of nine, the child can't read, despite the fact that she amazes people by spelling the specially memorized word "asphyxia", but can't spell the word"cat". Bill intends to leave and continue his old lifestyle, but Gray persuades him to stay, as she has already become attached to the girl. She buys new clothes for Bill and Sue and takes them to a restaurant, but Walker humiliates and insults Bill in the restaurant, and he and Sue have to leave. After falling out with Walker, Gray joins Bill and Sue.

Later, Bill confesses to Gray that in fact Sue is not his own daughter: he accidentally met her mother in Florida, and when the woman died suddenly, Bill began to raise the child himself, loving her like his own. When he lost his job and money, he couldn't bring himself to give the girl to an orphanage and took her with him. Gray comes to respect Bill and decides to continue helping him.

Then life continues to improve: Bill gets a job, makes plans to send Susan to school. But the rejected Walker begins to take revenge on Bill and Gray. He calls the committee on the rights of the child, and Bill ends up behind bars, because he never officially received custody of the girl, and Susan — in an orphanage. But Gray, as a lawyer, uses his connections, in particular, blackmailing his client, Mr. Arnold, to prepare the necessary documents for obtaining custody of Susan, and pays a cash bail so that Bill Dancer can be released. Meanwhile, Walker is going to meet Gray in the same underground parking lot. But Gray, realizing that it was Walker who framed Bill and Sue out of revenge, hits him against the wall with his car. Grey, Bill and Susan connect and live like a real family.

At the end of the film, Gray quits his job as a lawyer, swapping a Mercedes-500 SL for a Jeep Cherokee. Susan goes to school. As the end credits roll, Gray, Bill, and Sue are walking down the street.

15. Gremlins

-15

On a busy night in Chinatown, Rand Peltzer is looking for something. Let's hope it's not his sister who is also his daughter. Oh wait, that's a different Chinatown.

Rand is looking for a Christmas gift for his son. He finds the perfect present—an adorable fuzzy little creature called a mogwai—in a Chinese junk shop. You know what they say, one man's junk is another's biological weapon.

Rand is told to obey the three rules of mogwai care: 1. Keep it away from bright light. 2. Don't get it wet. 3. Don't ever, ever feed it after midnight. Don't even let it lick the Ben & Jerry's lid at 12:00:01.

We're getting a little ahead of ourselves, but if the old guy would tell Rand how dangerous Gizmo is, everything that's about to happen could be avoided.

He doesn't of course, so Rand brings the mogwai home to his son, Billy. Billy loves the cuddly furrball, who they name Gizmo. The next day Billy gets him wet. Way to go, Billy. You had one job. If there were a big red button that said "Don't Press or World Will End," Billy would hit it with his elbow.

To be fair, we can blame his friend Pete, played by Corey Feldman, who ruins everything. When Gizmo gets wet, his back bubbles up and little hairy eggs shoot out of it. They became more mogwai. These ones are cute but…different. One of them tries to bite Pete's finger. We doubt they're housebroken.
