The teenage years are a period of physical, social, emotional and sexual changes which occur all at once. This is a confusing stage of development where young people are learning about themselves and deciding what to do with their lives. Teenagers often face a variety of challenges as they move forward from childhood into adulthood. The problems that teenagers face include peer pressure, bullying, body image issues, underage drinking, teenage pregnancy, drug use, high school dropout rates and many others. These problems can make it difficult for young people to develop confidence and the life skills needed to cope with everyday situations. As teenagers undergo physical changes, their attraction to the opposite sex increases, and they start having dating relationships. This can lead to emotional ups and downs based on how they perceive the relationships. The heightened emotions experienced by teenagers can also lead to serious mental health problems after a breakup. The rejection associated with a terminated relationship can cause severe depression or a sense of isolation. The other problem with teenage dating is the risk of sexually transmitted disease or pregnancy. Usually teenagers are not financially or emotionally prepared for the consequences of their actions. Teenagers often misbehave and clash with their parents. They begin defining their identity and tend to focus on their peers. They have a strong feeling that they must do the same things as other people of their age. Teenagers often face vigorous peer pressure to try drugs, alcohol and cigarettes at parties and in social situations. If they get too involved, they risk addiction, health problems and self-harm.
