Banding

On 5 July, the banding took place online, on our YouTube channel "orlan.beloxvost". Ornithologist Rinur Bekmansurov accompanied the work with helpful comments. One of the interesting finds made during his visit to the nest were the feathers of a young meadow harrier.

On that day, the chicks turned 41 days and 39 days old. Both turned out to be males (of course, the exact answer will be known after genetic analysis). From the names suggested in the broadcast chat, we chose Almet (the oldest one) and Batyr (the younger one).

Now the right paw of the oldest one has an aluminum ring with black text across two lines with the code "AA-0711-1H"; on the left, a plastic white-green ring with "H-11". Batyr received similar ornaments. On his right paw he has a ring with number "AA-0712-1H"; on his left, "H-12".

The bands bear these colours and location for a reason. In regional bird banding programs, a colored band is put on the left paw of the bird, and a standard metal ring of the national banding center is put on the right. Our wards have a plastic-colored ring green on the bottom and white on the top with alternate colours for the code (a green letter on the white background and white numbers on the green background) and an aluminum ring on rivets with a black code over two lines. Such a ringing scheme is adopted for birds from the Volga-Ural region Volga (Kirov, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Penza, Ulyanovsk, Samara, Orenburg regions and the republics of Mordovia, Chuvashia, Mari-El, Udmurtia, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan) excluding the Lower. In addition, the rings that are worn on females and males differ from each other in the size of the inner diameter. For females, rings with a diameter of 25.5 mm are used, and for males – 22.5. What can we do?

During this time, Almet and Batyr have already completely changed their plumage and began to resemble adult birds (they will acquire adult plumage only after 6-7 years). They have learned an affectionate "song" and now they are vying to sing it to mum and dad. They learned to stand firmly on their paws, sleep standing up, eat independently and swallow huge chunks. Nevertheless, even now the parents patiently feed their beloved beaks, as before.

They learn to grab prey under the watchful eye of their parents.
