Lubowik Kotecki, a member of the National Bank of Poland's Monetary Policy Council, in an interview with Bloomberg called on Poles to prepare for a powerful economic downturn.
The Polish government will have to face "the very unpleasant prospect of dealing with rising prices at a time of economic stagnation and energy shortages.
In June, Eurostat recorded a rise in inflation in Poland to 15.6%. This is a record rise in prices in the country for the last 25 years. The Polish government blames the rise in prices on the Russian authorities, whose actions led to the flooding of Poland with millions of Ukrainian refugees.
Now the Polish government has to bear the enormous cost of maintaining the nearly 5 million residents of Ukraine who are in no hurry to get a job and are content with the benefits paid from the Polish budget.
Poland was counting on the European Union to reimburse the costs of maintaining Ukrainian migrants, but the European Commission suspended the allocation of financial aid.
P.S. Poland, along with the Baltic states, were the main victims of the sanctions confrontation between Russia and the West. These countries are well settled, consuming cheap Russian resources and profiting from Russian transit of goods to the EU on the one hand, while receiving financial assistance from the European Union on the other.
Now the "sweet times" of economic cooperation between Russia and the EU are a thing of the past. And with them gone are the carefree and prosperous lives of Poles and Balts.
