Сегодня воскресенье, а значит пора браться за чтение книг. Начнем мы наше чтение со столь популярной сейчас книгы, благодаря Нетфликс, как "Бриджертоны". Vocabulary:

  • Crumple - to become pressed

She crumpled the letter up into a ball and threw it on the fire.

  • hurl- hurl something/somebody + adv./prep. to throw something/somebody violently in a particular direction

He hurled a brick through the window.

  • pretend - to behave in a particular way, in order to make other people believe something that is not true

She pretended (that) she was his niece.

  • engross- if something engrosses you, it is so interesting that you give it all your attention and time

As the business grew, it totally engrossed him.

  • demand- to make a very strong request for something

Protesters demanded the resignation of the prime minister.

  • wail- to make a long, loud, high noise because you are sad or in pain

The little girl was wailing miserably.

  • malign- malign somebody/something to say bad things about somebody/something publicly

She feels she has been much maligned by the press.

  • wisely- in a way that shows you have a lot of experience and knowledge

She nodded wisely.

  • mahogany- the hard red-brown wood of a tropical tree, used for making furniture

A mahogany table.

  • embroidery- patterns that are sewn onto cloth using threads of various colours; cloth that is decorated in this way

A beautiful piece of embroidery.

Vocabulary:

  • set- set something + adv./prep. to put something in a particular place or position

She set a tray down on the table.

  • reach- to stretch your hand toward something in order to touch it, pick it up, etc.

She reached inside her bag for a pen.

  • smooth- to make something completely flat and even, without any lumps, holes, or rough areas

He took the letter and smoothed it flat on the table.

  • blink- shut and open your eyes quickly

He blinked in the bright sunlight.

  • suppose- used to make a statement, request, or suggestion less direct or less strong

Suppose we take a later flight?

  • slander- to make a false spoken statement about someone that is intended to damage the good opinion that people have of them

He angrily accused the investigators of slandering both him and his family.

  • lap-the top part of your legs that forms a flat surface when you are sitting down

There's only one seat so you'll have to sit on my lap.

  • veritable- a word used to emphasize that someone or something can be compared to someone or something else that is more exciting, more impressive, etc.

The meal that followed was a veritable banquet.

  • benediction- a Christian prayer of blessing

His arms outstretched in benediction.

  • force- to make someone do something that they do not want to do

She forced herself to be polite to them.

  • exhale - to breathe out the air

He sat back and exhaled deeply

  • pounding - a very loud repeated noise, such as the sound of something hitting something else hard; the sound or the feeling of your heart beating strongly

There was a pounding in his head.

  • hold out- to offer a chance, hope, or possibility of something

Doctors hold out little hope of her recovering.

  • match- a match for somebody somebody's match a person who is equal to someone else in strength, skill, intelligence, etc.

I was his match at tennis.

  • affection- the feeling of liking or loving someone or something very much and caring about them

I have a great affection for New York.

  • rest- the rest (of something) the remaining part of something

I am not doing this job for the rest of my life.

  • quick wit - able to react quickly and skillfully

He is lively and quick-witted despite his age.

  • stun- stun somebody/something to make a person or an animal unconscious for a short time, especially by hitting them on the head

The fall stunned me for a moment.

  • speechlessness- not able to speak, especially because you are extremely angry or surprised

She was stunned to speechlessness by his marriage proposal.

  • presence- the quality of making a strong impression on other people by the way you talk or behave

A man of great presence

  • honor - great respect and admiration for someone

They stood in silence as a mark of honor to her.
