And a very good morning to you, too! Isn’t today going to be a wonderful day? How do you do? Excuse me? Yes, of course you may! Etiquette, etiquette – where does it start and where does it stop? In a nutshell, it starts at the beginning and stops only when you do.

Ok – so what on earth does that all mean? Hmmm, well – the British etiquette prides itself on being polite and courteous at all times. There are no exceptions. EVERYTHING YOU DO – HOW YOU TALK, WALK, DRESS AND BE is a reflection of you, and how you communicate with the world around you.

You will be remembered – not for your successes, the amount of wealth, number of houses or yachts or academic qualifications you attain in live; rather for how you made others feel when in your presence.

Here’s a gentle reminder of just a few of the ‘de rigueur’ what you already know:

1. Always be on time (punctuality). We only have one life and so much time, and don’t want to waste a second of it waiting around needlessly.

2. Always say please and thank you. It’s just the way to do business. Manners don’t cost anything, but they sure usually get you something!

3. When someone is blocking your way, say ‘excuse me, please’. I know, I know – why should we say excuse me when someone’s blocking your way, right?

4. Watch out for that personal space. It’s important. You’ve been warned!

5. Oh, and while on the subject of personal space – just think twice about those unannounced house calls. The homeowner may not be best pleased.

6. Check out the handshakes. It’s usually much more customary than a hug or a kiss on the cheek. Of course, it’s not the gold standard, but the platinum standard would always be to read up on the social rules and etiquette of the person you’re about to meet with!

7. Going to dinner? Take a gift, use the cutlery (not your fingers) and held correctly (prongs down, food pushed to the back of the fork, not scooped) and don’t lean over the table for the salt. Ask someone to pass it for you. No elbows, no yawning, no coughing, no open-mouth chewing or talking with food in your mouth. Finally, no slurping or burping.

8. Phew – enjoy your meal and have a super Wednesday
