Doing these things can improve your IELTS, OET and general English score +1 each month you do them.
1. Read Story Books – about 30 minutes a day
(Extensive Reading)
Reading is the fastest way to improve your language skills. It is one way we learn our first language. Reading teaches you vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures, word orders, paragraph structures, story structures and much more.
2. Watch TV and Record – about 20 minutes a day
(Extensive Listening, Pronunciation Drilling, Mimicry)
Choose a TV show or movie you like.
Watch 5 minutes of the TV show or movie.
Try to repeat everything you hear, even if you don’t understand the words.
Use your phone to record yourself repeating.
3. Diary – about 5 minutes a day
(Free-writing, Extensive Writing, Cognitive Programming)
For 5 minutes, every day, at the exact same times, just write. Don’t worry about vocabulary, spelling or grammar. Don’t even worry about what you want to say. Just write, without stopping, for 5 minutes. The first week of doing this will be difficult. After a week, you will start writing much better.
4. Talk to Yourself – all day long
(Extensive Speaking, Building Language Chunks, Cognitive Programming)
It’s important to practice speaking. One way to do this is to narrate your own life in your head. For example, “I’m walking. I’m walking. There’s a dog. It’s a small dog. I don’t like small dogs. I’m hungry. What did I eat yesterday? Did I have noodles? I don’t think so. What do I want to eat today?”
5. Talk to Foreigners/Your Teachers – 1 or 2 times a week
(Authentic Situations, Confidence Building, Extensive Speaking and Listening)
The reason for learning language is to communicate with foreigners and understand your studies and coursework. If you’re not communicating with foreigners, why are you learning the language?
Talking to foreigners will build up your confidence with the language and allow you to practice speaking and listening in real life situations.
