Ты выбрал бремя Белых,
Детей, как в изгнанье, пошли,
Служить покорённым народам
На самом краю земли;
Учить угрюмых и тёмных
Неграмотных дикарей,
То ласковых, то злобных
Полу дьяволов, полу детей.
Ты выбрал бремя белых –
Терпи не унывай,
На злобу и угрозы
Враждой не отвечай;
Учись, смиряя гордость,
Твердить одно сто раз,
Чтоб был понятен каждому,
Туземцу твой приказ.
Ты выбрал бремя белых -
Удел бороться за мир,
Здоровье вернуть болящим,
Голодным устроить пир.
Когда будешь близок к цели,
К которой упорно шагал -
Язычников лень и глупость
Разрушит всё то, что создал.
Ты выбрал бремя белых –
Твой крест не власть короля,
А труд крепостного в неволе,
Чтоб вспаханы были поля.
Ты в джунглях построишь дороги,
Заводы, мосты, города.
Отдав свои силы работе,
Забытый уснёшь навсегда.

В награду получишь за труд:
Ненависть и упрёки,
Бунт и неправедный суд,
За то, что слепых звал к свету,

Право на лень просить.

Угрюмый язычник проверит

О пышном венке лавровом,
И хоре громких похвал;
