Let us discuss such a crucial issue about changes in the world we live in.
First of all, I would like to start with dividing this topic into several parts where each one is related to a specific sphere of life. It seems to be more sensible for considering this topic more globally.
So, by contrasting some areas, we should admit, that over the past at least 100 years a lot of important changes have come. Unfortunately, the truth is that it is almost impossible for all areas of life to be transformed for good.
If we are discussing the latest discoveries of medicine, scientific research and technology, we can admit for sure that they brought large benefits to humankind. However, some new viruses and diseases have arisen (covid, for example). A woman, who could not have a child, now has a possibility to get a special service, like ivf (in vitro fertilization) and bear her own baby. It is fundamental, isn’t it? And what about appearing computers and online calls all over the world? It seemed infeasible and some kind of a joke!
Speaking about negotiations between countries, it looks much funnier every year. There is a large majority of communicating skills toolboxes, books, programmes. Many people are well-educated, sensible and smart. However, the farther we live the less can avoid wars. The current situation between Russia and Ukraine is rather controversial, so I would prefer miss it. The only thing the society wants is preventing wars at all costs. But we are not aware of what is happening in politics, what presidents are considering about. Anyway, wars have always been, and, I suppose they won’t stop. Every time there is something between countries to struggle for.
Freedom and human rights, to my mind, have acknoweledged more than ever. Homosexuality is accepted in some European countries nowadays. Young people now have more freedom in the Internet, at the stage and have large opportunities to be who they feel like being. Though, in Russia particularly the term of democracy remains unstable. People have rights by law, however face problems implementing them in real life.
As for knowledge, education and skills, it is the era of thriving of these areas. There have never been such lucky opportunities of getting education and special skills online and also for free. Only a lazy man can be unemployed and poor these days. Such sites, as Youtube, Instagram (until recently), Geekbrains, Skillbox offer a wide variety of different kinds of learning programmes. You are able to get a new profession just for few clicks.
All in all, the life has become more convenient for a modern man. According to Rosstat, the level of real income has increased by 140%. On the other hand, by contrasting this indicator with developing countries, it is still low.
In conclusion, it should be taken into the consideration the fact that everything has its two own sides. That is why, it is hard to judge strictly and answer the question « Is our world getting better or worse?» As for me, it would be great to spend more budget, efforts and time on issues closely connected to people’s everyday urgent problems. We all should make something that makes our life easier.
