Everyone can find a volunteering programme which they will enjoy as there are lots of different kinds of projects from planting a tree to helping turtles get to a sea.
Recently I've come across a site called 'Volunteering Solutions' which contains a huge amount of projects, all of which can be tried. It got my attention and I explored one of them so that I was attracted. The programme's called 'Sports Volunteering in Ghana | Football coaching'
Overview
Ghanaians are extremely passionate about football and their love for the game is evident everywhere. You can see people wearing the Ghana Team jerseys and the cars on the road having the team stickers and flags.
Volunteering Solutions places volunteers in this programme in local schools and football clubs in the Tamale region in Northern Ghana. The people of Tamale love the game of football, especially since the city has got a brand new football stadium.
Volunteers role is to assist the local coaches in their daily practice schedule with the local players. Volunteers can also help the students in local schools to improve their game and organize football matches.
Programme requirements
Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the time of joining the project. You need to have an open mind and a flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference and should have a keen interest in sports and football. Participants must be fit and healthy at the time of joining the programme. Participants should have no criminal convictions and should provide a clean criminal background check report.
Roles, resposibilities and work shedule
Volunteers, mainly, will be required to;
- Assist the local coaches in their daily practice schedule with the local players.
- Help the students in local schools to improve their game and organize football matches.
- Help in the development of football skills of young players.
- Create a game plan for the children to make it easier for them to adapt with and learn the skills.
- Interact with the children and understand their problems, and help repair their weak points in the game.
Volunteering Solutions provide accommodation in Tamale with a local host family. The schedule for the volunteers remains as follows;
- Saturday - Arrival at Accra
- Sunday - Transfer to Tamale + showing around the accommodation neighborhood
- Monday - Orientation session will be conducted by the local coordinator, covering topic areas; such as safety, culture, language, places to visit, behavior, food, and other suggestion over things to do in Ghana.
- Tuesday to Fri - Volunteer work
- Breakfast - 06:00 am onwards (provided at the accommodation)
- Working hours at the placement - 07:00 am to 01:00 pm and 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm
- Lunch - 02:00 pm to 03:00 pm (volunteers need to manage lunch on their own)
- Dinner - 06:30 pm to 07:30 pm (provided at the accommodation)
Weekends - Free to explore the city and take short excursions trip to some of the best hotspots in and around Tamale, such as; Mole National Park, Monkey Sanctuary, Kintampo Falls. Learn about their elaborate festivals, the local cuisine comprising of Banku and Fufu - Ghana's most famous dishes, their colorful dresses, and the music and dances.
