USSR The birthday of hockey in Russia is 22nd of December 1946, when the first matches of the first USSR hockey matches were played in Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, Kaunas and Arkhangelsk. Already the first meeting with the Canadians ended with the victory of the Soviet athletes - 7: 2. This victory brought the USSR national team the first world title, the Soviet team took the leading position in world hockey. The true heroes of that tournament were goalkeepers Nikolai Puchkov and Grigory Mkrtychan, defenders Alfred Kuchevsky, Dmitry Ukolov, Alexander Vinogradov, Pavel Zhiburtovich, Genrikh Sidorenkov, forwards Vsevolod Bobrov, Viktor Shuvalov, Alexey Guryshev, Yuri Krylov, Mikhail Bychkov, Alexander Uvarov, Val Evgeny Babich, Nikolay Khlystov, Alexander Komarov. Almost the same team won Olympic gold in 2 years.

In 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2014, the Russian national team won the World Cup without losing a single meeting at those tournaments - in 2008 and 2009, Canada was defeated in the final matches (5: 4 in overtime and 2: 1), in 2012 and 2014 - Slovakia and Finland with a score of 5: 2.
