Mad King of Great Britain

King George III was born on 4th June in 1738. He was the son of  Frederick, Prince of Wales and his wife Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. He ascended the throne after the death of his grandfather George II in 1760, as his father had died earlier in 1751. Under the ruling of King George III, in 1800 the British and Irish Parliaments passed an Act of Union that took effect on 1st January 1801, and united Great Britain and Ireland into a single state known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. This was the most significant event during his reign. Also, under the terms of the Treaty of Amiens, George III dropped the title of King of France, which was used for every English monarch since Edward III's claim to the French throne in the medieval period.     In the person of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, the king found a loving and caring spouse, but his sons gave him a lot of anxiety because of their lack of motivation and wastefulness.

George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had twelve children: George IV; Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany; William IV; Charlotte Princess Royal; Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearen; Princess Augusta; Princess Elizabeth; Ernest Augustus, King of Hanover; Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex; Prince Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge; Princess Mary, Duchess of Gloucester and Edinburgh; Princess Sophia; Prince Octavius; Prince Alfred and Princess Amelia.

George III went down in history as a mad king. During his rampages he talked with angels or trees, but in general he was completely harmless. George first showed signs of mental illness in 1788. At the same time, he claimed to be married to Countess Pembroke, formerly Lady Elizabeth Spencer, the respectable queen's maid of honour. The monarch declared to his wife that she had gone mad thirty years ago and said that he had invented a new doctrine on the Trinity. Moreover, he took the oath to the Prussian king Frederick. The sick king was admitted to Bethlem Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in London, where he recovered quite quickly, but the disease returned to him regularly in 1801, 1804 and 1810. However, from 1811 onwards, a regency was established over George III, whose course of disease became irreversible. The Prince Regent was his eldest son, who was Prince of Wales and also named George.

Until the end of his days, King George III lived in his lonely world; he didn't even notice the death of his wife in 1818. He was blind and deaf. At the beginning of 1820, the monarch refused to eat and died on 29th January from malnutrition at the age of 81.
