This move of America was being considered as a strong message for China. However, reacting to this decision of the US, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said that America's decision to boycott the Games is a violation of the Olympic spirit.
The US has made this announcement at a time when China has resolved to take 'retaliatory action' against such diplomatic boycott.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that American athletes will participate in these Olympic Games and the players will have our full support, but we will not be a part of various events related to the Games.
Washington has taken this decision after months of deliberation.
The Winter Olympics are to be held in February next year. "In view of the human rights abuses and atrocities in Xinjiang, China, US diplomats will treat the Games as a normal event," Saki said. We will continue to work to promote human rights in China and beyond.

Objecting to the US decision, China warned Beijing would retaliate if Washington did a diplomatic boycott of February's Winter Olympic Games. Liu Pengyu, a spokesman for the Chinese embassy in the US, said that if the US did so, it would be a politically provocative action.
China said, this move is pretentious and a serious distortion of the Olympic Charter spirit.
Pengyu called the Biden administration's decision a political manipulation, saying it would not affect the success of the event.
