Mortgage and ghosts
A student by the name of Jin-ho lived in Seoul in South Korea. She decided to rent an apartment. Something cheap. Soon she found a nice little studio in very good condition in an old house. However, the rent was still a bit too high. So, she decided to find a roommate so that they could split the rent in two parts.
Jin-ho decided to look for a roommate in the same college where she studied. She posted an ad on the students’ message board. And a couple of days later she got an answer.
She found a girl her age who was also looking for a room.
On the first day in their new apartment there was a knock on the door. The girls opened it to find an elderly lady standing in the doorway. The woman said that she used to live in that very apartment and that she really missed the place. Then the woman simply left without saying anything else.
The next day the old lady came back and just like on the first day she left almost as soon as the girls had opened the door. So the girls decided to ask the landlord about the strange old woman. But to their surprise and horror the landlord told them that the old lady who used to live in that apartment had died a year before.
Frightened out of their minds the girls decided to go see a local shaman. The shaman explained that the old woman was actually a ghost and told them not to open the door when the woman came back. He also gave them an amulet to protect against evil spirits.
Upon returning home the girls hung the amulet over the door.
That same night the woman came back and started knocking on the door but the girls did not answer. Then the knocking became louder. The girls were terrified. Suddenly the knocking stopped and the old woman behind the door started sobbing. The girls became very sorry for the old woman and opened the door. But when they did instead of the old lady they saw a terrible angry ghost shouting insults at the girls.
The girls were so scared that without even thinking they closed the door in the ghost’s face. The sobbing and the shouting stopped and all was quiet. But then Jin-ho saw that the amulet was missing. So the next morning the girls went to the shaman for a new amulet. But this one too disappeared.
Upset Jin-ho went to the shaman alone. This time the shaman told Jin-ho that her roommate was in fact the problem. Her roommate was herself a ghost and it was she who was stealing the amulets. The shaman had never told her that before because the girls had always come together. The shaman gave Jin-ho a new amulet and told her to perform a special cleansing ritual to chase the ghost away.
After the ritual the ghost disappeared but Jin-ho decided never to rent another apartment. Instead she took out a mortgage in the bank and bought herself her own place. She lived there a happy life, and continued to make mortgage payments each month until retirement.
