These pits were called “foxholes” and were dug among the hedges (bocage) of the Normandy countryside.
In the photo of American soldier the Sergeant Vandenberg of the 35th Infantry Division of the US (134th Infantry Regiment(?). “Foxhole” is dug on the slope in the northern part of the Saint-Lô cemetery.
