I would like to start with the reasons of such long-term war. The official cause was the claim of the English King Edward III to the French throne. He claimed it in 1328, but was refused. Then the preparations for war began.
The four periods of the Hundred Years ' war
Let me introduce you the time frame of this war. The confrontation between England and France started in 1337 and ended in 1453. Historians divide it into 4 periods:
- Edwardian that goes from 1337 to 1360.
- Karolinski that goes from 1360 to 1389.
- The Lancastrian war that goes from 1415 to 1420.
- Final stage that longed to 1453.

Edwardian stage
- The war had started 3 years ago, but only in 1340 England got first significant result at the sea battle of Sluys.
- The real triumph of Edward III was the victory at Crecy in 1346. His soldiers, exhausted by the march, were able to overcome the enemy's numerically superior army. The credit for this victory belongs to the English archers.
In 1356 in the Battle of Poitiers, Edward's son, nicknamed the Black Prince, had already distinguished himself. He not only led his men out of the trap, defeated the enemy, but also captured the French King John II.
It played to England's advantage at the conclusion of the peace in 1360 in Bretigny. A third of the French lands were recognized as English possessions, and a large ransom was paid for the king's freedom.
