Music has always played a significant role in people’s life. Therefore, some think that it would be desirable to teach every child to play a musical instrument, whereas others do not find this component of education suitable for everyone.
As for me, I agree with the second statement. To begin with, it does not make sense to learn to play an instrument if a child has no talent for music. Teaching such children is a complete waste of time and effort. What is more, even musically gifted children cannot grow into good musicians if they themselves do not want to, and learning under compulsion cannot ensure results.
However, there are people who think differently. They are firmly convinced that the ability to play a musical instrument is as essential as literacy, numeracy and life skills: it broadens the mind and develops useful skills such as manual dexterity or time perception. Additionally, regular music classes help a child to become more attentive, hard-working, motivated, responsible and disciplined.
I do not share the opposing position. In my opinion, there are many other ways to increase the range of children’s knowledge and experience, with school activities coming first. Personal qualities can be improved, for example, by doing sports.
To sum up, I would like to say again that despite the advantages learning to play a musical instrument may have, not all children should take it up because having no ear for music or desire to perform music makes the process of learning ineffective.
