Objective Adv., Complete Adv., Compact Adv., Exam Booster, Gold C1 Adv., Expert Adv., Ready for Adv., Straight to Adv. Personally, I’ve chosen Expert for my courses as it seems like the most solid book for exam preparation.
Choose one book
- on collocations,
- on phrasal verbs,
- on general vocabulary;
- on grammar.
For example, these supplementary materials: Grammar and Vocabulary for Advanced (Cambridge), Oxford Word Skills, Idioms and Phrasal Verbs (Oxford), Grammar and Voc for Cambridge Adv. and Proficiency (Side, Wellman).
4. Do Practice Tests on a regular basis
(for example, once a month) with timing yourself and not using any resources. The tests could be taken from:
• Trainers/Testbuilders: tests that teach;
• Official Cambridge Examination Papers.
Practice Vocab with Quizlet or any other app for learning words, but learn collocations and chunks of language, NOT separate words.
5. Practice every day for 10-15 min using authentic materials
Such as newspapers: the Guardian, the Time, magazines: the New York Times; videos: BBC/National Geographic, documentaries; podcasts: BBC Radio 4, Ted Radio Hour.
Subscribe to these channels, so that you could read and listen to them on a regular basis!
A month or two before the exam:
>> Pick one of the trainers/testbuilders.
>> Work through it to consolidate your exam preparation.
>> Pick one of the official past paper books.
>> Work through it to predict your exam results.
And the topics for C1 which one will definitely find in the tests are arranged for you:
• Environment: ecology, global warming, wildlife;
• Science: new technologies, futurology;
• Health, medicine, fitness;
• Traveland tourism;
• Language and literature;
• Family, relationships, agony aunt;
• Lifestyle, consumerism, fashion;
• Art: exhibitions, theatre, cinema;
• Book and film reviews;
• Education;
• Psychology, behaviour, cognitive science;
• Work, career, employment.
