To Kill a Mockingbird. It is a powerful novel in which the author paints a true and lively picture of a quiet Southern town in Alabama rocked by a young girl's accusation of criminal assault. The main theme of the novel is the detraction of black men.

From the extract of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird, we are looking on the situation at law, when everybody declares against innocent black man, Tom Robinson. Everything happens behind the eyes of a little girl, Jean Louise – the narrator of the story and the daughter of Atticus Finch, an experienced smart lawyer, who decided to protect a Negro at law.

The occasion of dispute is the relation between a Negro, Tom Robinson, and a White, Bob Swell's daughter. When Bob sees the relation between them, he hits his daughter and says that is a Negro who has done it. It is clear from the very begging that Robinson looses this fight, only because he is Negro. Atticus Finch describes such unfair situation in the world and tries to protect him as much as he could. Finch's long speech is amazing and truthful, but society doesn't prepare to admit the true about the Blacks and the Whites. The court bring in a verdict of guilty. Atticus Finch is crushed, his speech makes nothing and he just leaves the court.

In this short, but powerful extract of the novel, we can find different stylistic devises. There are different lexical stylistic devises, for example, Cliché or Simile "This case is as simple as black and white" or "a lie as black as Tom Robinson's skin", Ellipsis "Gentlemen" or "With the court's permission —"; Metaphor or Hyperbole "I have nothing but pity in my heart for the chief witness for the state..."; Zeugma "...he must be removed from her presence, from this world"; Repetition "You know the truth, and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral, some Negro men are not to be trusted around women...".

There are different syntactical devises, for example, Parallelism "... he unbuttoned his vest, unbuttoned his collar, loosened his tie, and took off his coat"; Framing "...she persisted in breaking it. She persisted"; Prolepsis [prəʊˈlɛpsɪs] "We do know in part what Mr Ewell did: he did what any God-fearing ... white man would do..."; a lot of Detachments "some people would have us believe — some people are, smarter than others, some people have more opportunity because they're born with it, some men make more money than others, some ladies make better cakes than others — some people are born gifted beyond the normal scope of most men..." and again Repetition or Anaphora [əˈnæfərə] – repetition of words at the beginning of sentences; Chiasmus [kaɪˈæzməs] – inversion in the second part of the phrase, "A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up".

All these stylistic devises help us to feel the power and tensity (напряженность) of the situation at law. To understand the inner feelings of Atticus Fench, though the narrator is his daughter but not him. Through all these devises like Metaphor "pity in my heart" or Repetition " You know the truth, and the truth is this...", we can understand that this speech is very painful for him and he has flaming willing to get his ideas to everyone at law, but understands that he doesn't have any chance. In spite of everything he fights, because his little children look at him. Fench wants to teach them how to be a good man, a really good man, but not an awfully, inhuman White man.
